石川翔太とジョシュ・ネルソンの邂逅は、まさにその稀有な領域に属している。互いにそれぞれの世界を極めた二人のアーティストが、驚くほど自然に共通の地平を見出しているのだ。
『My New Profile – Together Again with Josh Nelson』は、そのことを雄弁に物語る輝かしい証である。そこには、空気の中に感じられるほどの親密な呼応があり、あらゆる音が微笑みや呼吸、そして共有された記憶に応答しているかのように響く。
繊細な表現力を持つフルーティストであり、類まれな感受性を備えたコントラバシストでもある石川は、この二つの楽器言語を自在に操りながら、本作において極めて個人的な音楽世界を提示している。
収録曲の多くは彼自身の作品であり、繊細で光に満ちたワルツ「Lonely Tea Cups」、チック・コリアのスピリットを想起させるエネルギーと色彩を持つ「Suite–Dora Steps」、そして伝統への喜びと技巧的なオマージュである「My Idiominitation of Bebop」などが並ぶ。
また本作には、石川が敬愛し親交のあったジョージ・ムラーツへの感動的なトリビュートも収められている。「Haunted Heart」と「My Foolish Heart」では、石川が弓を用いて稀有な強度で演奏を聴かせ、さらに彼自身の楽曲「For B.C.」は、本作の白眉のひとつであり、優雅さと感謝に満ちている。
さらに特筆すべきは、レス・スパンがオリジナル録音でフルートを演奏したデューク・ピアソンの美しいバラード「You Know I Care」である。
ジョシュ・ネルソンもまた、「Ode to a Zoetrope」「Atma-Krandana」「Mint Blues」という物語性豊かな三曲を提供し、デュオの音楽的パレットをさらに広げている。彼の演奏は洗練され、創造的で、深い叙情性を湛えており、石川の音と自然に絡み合い、あたかも二つの声が一つの声であるかのように響く。
静謐なバラード、ビバップの飛翔、印象主義的な色彩、そしてベルベットのようなグルーヴ――本作は、理想的なパートナーに支えられながら、円熟の境地にある一人の音楽家の肖像を描き出している。

There are musical encounters that owe nothing to chance, nor to the simple addition of talents. The meeting of Shota Ishikawa and Josh Nelson belongs to that rare category in which two artists, each a master of his own universe, find a common ground with an almost disconcerting naturalness. My New Profile – Together Again with Josh Nelson is the shining proof of this: an album where complicity can be felt in the air, where every note seems to answer a smile, a breath, a shared memory. A flutist of great finesse and a double bassist of uncommon sensitivity, this dual instrumental language already being an event in itself, Shota offers here a deeply personal recording. Most of the compositions are his own: “Lonely Tea Cups,” a delicate and luminous opening waltz; “Suite – Dora Steps,” whose energy and colors recall the spirit of Chick Corea; and “My Idiominitation of Be-Bop,” a joyful, virtuosic nod to the tradition. The album also carries a moving tribute to George Mraz, whom Shota knew and admired. It includes “Haunted Heart” paired with “My Foolish Heart,” where Shota plays with the bow with rare intensity, as well as his composition “For B.C.,” one of the album’s high points, full of elegance and gratitude. Also noteworthy is Duke Pearson’s beautiful ballad “You Know I Care,” on which Les Spann played flute in the original recording. Josh Nelson contributes three pieces of great narrative richness “Ode to a Zoetrope,” “Atma-Krandana,” and “Mint Blues” which further broaden the duo’s palette. His playing, refined, inventive, and deeply lyrical, intertwines naturally with Shota’s, as if their two voices formed a single one. Between suspended ballads, bebop flights, impressionistic colors, and velvety grooves, this album sketches the portrait of a musician in full maturity, accompanied by an ideal partner. A sincere, inspired, generous record. A record that breathes music.
